A lion slept under a shady tree. A little mouse ran over his paw and woke him. The lion caught the mouse and wanted to eat him. The mouse asked to go free and promised to help one day. The lion laughed, but let him go. Later, the lion was caught in a hunter's net. He roared and pulled, but could not get out. The mouse heard him, came near and bit the ropes with his small teeth. Soon the lion was free. The lion thanked the mouse and saw that even a small friend can help in a big way. Lesson: Kindness can come back to you.
Read the title and look at the pictures before starting. Point to each word as you read, then let your child join in with repeated lines or familiar CVC words. Pause to blend sounds such as c-a-t and m-a-t, without turning the story into a test. Ask what happened first, next and last. Talk about the lion's choice, the mouse's promise and how the ending changed the lion's mind. Children who are ready can read one short line alone. You can also use Early Reader Books for more shared reading practice.
Ask your child to draw the lion's net and show how the mouse helped. Write a few words from the story on small slips, such as lion, net, ran and bit, then sort them by their short vowel sound. Make a simple word family with -at, -an or -et and invite your child to add a word. Act out the story with a toy animal, a paper mouse and a loose piece of string. For older children, ask them to change one part of the story and say what might happen next.
CVC readers are short books or stories that give practice with consonant-vowel-consonant words such as cat, hen, pig, hot and sun. They often use simple sentences and picture clues.
They are commonly used with children aged about 3 to 8, depending on the child's phonics experience. Younger children may listen and spot letters, while older beginners can read more of the text independently.
Read the story together, point to each word and blend unfamiliar words slowly. Re-read it on another day so your child can build confidence with the same words.
Yes. EarlyActivity printables are free to download with a free account and can be printed for use at home or in your own classroom. Files are PDFs for A4 and US Letter paper, and you should print at Actual size, or 100%.
Children benefit from recognising some letter sounds and hearing the separate sounds in a word. They can then practise joining sounds, such as m-a-t, to read the whole word.
