A hungry dog found a piece of meat and carried it home. On the way, he crossed a bridge over a stream. When he looked down, he saw his reflection in the water and thought it was another dog holding another piece of meat. The greedy dog wanted that piece too, so he opened his mouth to bark and grab it. His own piece of meat fell into the stream and was carried away. The dog went home hungry because he had wanted more than he already had. Lesson: Greed can make us lose what we have.
Read the story aloud first, using a clear voice for the dog and pausing when he sees the reflection. Ask your child what the dog had, what he wanted and what happened when he opened his mouth. Talk about how the water made a reflection and why the dog was mistaken. Younger children can name the beginning, middle and ending. Older children can explain the dog's choice and suggest a wiser one. You can compare this story with Moral Stories for Kids after reading.
Use the printables to put the main events in order, match words to pictures and answer simple comprehension questions. Your child can colour the dog, bridge and stream, then draw the piece of meat safely in the dog's mouth. Older children can write a new ending in which the dog feels thankful for what he has. Try a short role-play with one child as the dog and another as the reflection. A useful home link is to make a list of things your child already has and feels thankful for.
The story teaches that greed can make us lose what we already have. It also encourages contentment and careful thinking.
The dog saw his own reflection, but he thought it was another dog carrying another piece of meat.
