What children practise

The set gives children several ways to identify a fraction. They may read a fraction from shaded parts, write the fraction for a group of objects, match pictures with fraction symbols, or place simple fractions on a number line. Younger learners can begin with halves, thirds and quarters, while older children can work with eighths, tenths and mixed visual models. The activities move from clear pictures to less supported questions. For wider practice, you can pair these pages with Fractions Worksheets.

Simple ways to use the pages

At home, start with one page and ask your child to explain how they found the numerator and denominator. Cut paper circles or rotis into equal parts and let your child match the real model to a worksheet question. In class, children can work in pairs, take turns shading a fraction, and check each other's answers using counters or fraction strips. Keep a few pages for morning maths, revision before a test, or a quiet activity after a hands-on lesson.

Help with common mistakes

Children often count the shaded parts but forget to count all the equal parts. Ask, "How many parts are there altogether?" before they write the fraction. Remind them that the denominator names the total number of equal parts and the numerator names the selected parts. If the parts are unequal, pause and redraw the shape before identifying a fraction. When a child confuses the two numbers, use a fraction strip and say the fraction aloud while pointing to each part.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by using counters or paper shapes first, then asking your child to record the fraction on the worksheet.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to draw a different shape that shows the same fraction and explain why it works.
  • Link the skill to real life by spotting halves, quarters and thirds in fruit, sandwiches, rotis or groups of classroom objects.
