From pictures to expanded numbers

This set introduces the idea that a number can be split into parts. Younger children can count pictures, group objects and match a number to its tens and ones. Children who are ready for written work can complete prompts such as 14 = 10 + 4 or build numbers from given parts. Use the simpler pages with Nursery, LKG and UKG children, then offer the number sentences to children in Class 1. Children aged 2 and 3 may need to talk through the activity rather than write every answer.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, read each number aloud and let your child make it with bottle tops, blocks or buttons before writing. For a class activity, place ten counters in one group and loose counters beside them, then ask children to name the tens and ones. You can work through one example together on a board before children try a sheet. Pair children so one child builds the number and the other records it. Keep a few worksheets for short revision sessions after counting practice, or connect the activity to Number 1 Worksheets and other early number work.

Helping with common mistakes

A common mistake is treating 23 as 2 + 3 instead of 20 + 3. Remind your child that the 2 is in the tens place, so it means two groups of ten. Children may also reverse the tens and ones, especially when reading a number aloud. Ask them to point to the tens digit first, make the groups with counters and say the full number slowly. For numbers below 10, explain that there are zero tens. Use a ten-frame or bundle of ten sticks when your child needs a clear picture of place value.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by using counters or drawn groups of ten before asking your child to write an expanded number.
  • Make it harder by giving the expanded form, such as 30 + 6, and asking your child to write the number it makes.
  • Keep it practical by splitting a small collection of objects into groups of ten and leftover ones during tidy-up time.

أسئلة يطرحها الأهل

What is expanded form in maths?

Expanded form shows a number as the value of each digit added together. For example, 25 can be written as 20 + 5.

At what age can children learn expanded form?

Children aged 2 to 4 can begin with grouping and matching activities. Written tens and ones work is usually more suitable when a child is ready to work with numbers to 20 and beyond.

How can I teach expanded form at home?

Make groups of ten with blocks, bottle tops or sticks, then place the extra ones beside them. Say the number, name the tens and ones, and write the matching number sentence together.

Why does my child write 24 as 2 + 4?

Your child may not yet understand that the 2 stands for two tens. Build 24 with two groups of ten and four single objects, then show why the expanded form is 20 + 4.

How do I download or print these worksheets?

Download the worksheet PDF with a free EarlyActivity account, then print it for home or your own classroom. The files are sized for A4 and US Letter paper, and the site recommends printing at Actual size, or 100%.
