What the worksheets practise

This set gives children repeated practice with the short a sound and the common -at ending. Younger children can trace letters, match pictures to words and colour simple pictures. Children who are ready to read can sort words, complete missing letters, build words from sounds and write short phrases. Simple ways to use them

At home, choose one sheet for a short practice time and say each word aloud before your child writes it. Keep small letter tiles, bottle caps or paper cards nearby so your child can build c-a-t and then change one letter to make bat or hat. In class, place matching and sorting activities at a phonics centre, then ask children to read their words to a partner. You can also write -at on the board and invite children to add beginning sounds from the worksheet. Let children colour after the reading task is complete.

Helping with common mistakes

Children sometimes read the first sound correctly but forget to blend it with -at. Point under each sound as your child says it slowly, then sweep your finger across the whole word and say it smoothly. Some children may confuse b, c, h, m and r, especially when writing from memory. Let them look at a clear model, trace the letter, and try again without rushing. If a child writes a word that is not in the family, ask, "Can we hear -at at the end?" This encourages careful listening instead of guessing from the picture.
