Simple sentences for early writers

This set moves from very short sentences to slightly longer ones, so you can choose a suitable starting point for your child. Younger children can trace large words and familiar phrases with plenty of space between the letters. Older preschoolers can practise a complete sentence with a capital letter, clear word spaces and a full stop. The wording stays simple and concrete, with subjects and actions children can understand. Children who are still building pencil control may first trace with a crayon, then try a pencil when their hand feels ready.

Use the worksheets in small steps

Begin by reading the sentence aloud and talking about what it means. Point to each word as your child traces, then ask your child to say the sentence once more. At home, use one worksheet after a story, during a quiet table activity or before writing a shopping list together. In class, place a few choices in a writing centre and invite children to work with a partner. Keep the first attempt short. You can pair this set with Pencil Control Worksheets when a child needs extra practice with pencil movement.

Help with spacing and letter direction

Children often rush across a sentence, join words together or start a letter from the wrong place. Gently pause at each word space and use a finger as a small gap marker. If a child loses the line, cover part of the sentence and reveal one word at a time. Say the letter sound or letter name only when it helps, rather than correcting every mark. Praise careful effort, such as starting at the top or stopping at the full stop. A relaxed hand and a steady pace matter more than finishing the whole sheet.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by tracing one word at a time with your finger before your child uses a pencil.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to copy a short sentence underneath after tracing it.
  • Keep it real by finding a capital letter, word space and full stop in a sentence from a familiar story.
