Writing practice for growing writers

The set moves from simple paragraph building to more independent writing. Younger children can sort ideas, complete a topic sentence and add a few related details. Older children can plan a paragraph, use linking words, write a closing sentence and revise their work. Topics are familiar enough to help children think of ideas, while the page structure gives them a clear starting point. These paragraph writing worksheets work well for children who are learning how a group of sentences stays focused on one main idea.

Use the worksheets at home or in class

At home, ask your child to talk about the topic before writing. Let them say three ideas aloud, jot key words, then turn the notes into sentences. In class, use one activity for shared writing on the board before children work alone. Pairs can read each other's paragraphs and underline the main idea and supporting details. Keep a small word bank nearby for linking words such as first, next, because and finally. A short follow-up task could be writing the same paragraph neatly in a notebook.

Help children keep one clear idea

A common difficulty is adding sentences that are interesting but do not belong with the topic. Ask your child to read the topic sentence, then check each detail by asking, Does this explain or describe the main idea? Children may also repeat the same point, miss full stops or change tense halfway through. Encourage a simple three-step check: meaning, order and punctuation. For older children, ask them to replace repeated words, add a precise detail and read the paragraph aloud to hear where a sentence needs changing.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by giving your child a topic sentence and a small word bank before they write the supporting details.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to write two connected paragraphs with a clear opening and closing sentence.
  • Keep it practical by turning a family activity, school event or favourite place into a short paragraph topic.
