What children will practise

The set includes activities about family members, relationships, family roles and things people do together. Younger children can colour pictures, match words to pictures and trace simple labels. Older children can complete a family tree, write names or sentences, compare family routines and answer short questions. The activities leave room for different family structures, including families with grandparents, one parent, relatives or other caring adults. Children can use their own family details where they feel comfortable, or work with a picture family provided on the worksheet.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, look at a family photograph together and let your child name the people they know. Ask open questions such as, Who helps you get ready for school? or What do you enjoy doing together? In class, use a worksheet as a speaking activity before children draw or write. Helping children talk about families

Children sometimes assume that every family has the same people, or they may confuse words such as parent, sibling, aunt and cousin. Use clear examples from books, pictures and the classroom without asking a child to explain private family matters. For younger children, say the relationship aloud while pointing to the picture. For older children, ask them to check each label and explain how two people are related. Accept family terms used at home, then gently introduce the standard English word where useful.
