What children learn about the home

The worksheets introduce familiar rooms such as the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living room. Children may match objects to the correct room, trace simple words, colour household pictures, sort items and draw a room of their own. Younger children can name and point to pictures, while older children can label rooms, complete short sentences or describe what happens in each space. The activities connect naturally with Parts of a House Worksheets and My Family Worksheets.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, walk through one room with your child before starting. Ask them to find an object from the worksheet, such as a bed, plate, bucket or chair. In class, place room picture cards on the board and let children sort object cards under the right heading. Use a completed drawing as a speaking task: each child can say which room they like and name two things in it. Older children can write a few labels or make a mini house plan, while younger children can answer by pointing, colouring or saying the word aloud.

Helping children use house words correctly

Children often place an object in a room based on where they have seen it, so accept sensible answers when an item can belong in more than one place. A table may be in a kitchen, dining area or study. They may also mix up room names or call every washing space a bathroom. Say the word clearly, show the picture again and use it in a short sentence. For example, say, "We cook in the kitchen" or "We sleep in the bedroom." Avoid teaching one house layout as the only correct one, since homes may have different rooms and arrangements.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by covering some labels and asking your child to match only two or three rooms at a time.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to label a room, write one sentence about it and add an object that is not shown.
  • Keep it connected to real life by taking a room walk and asking your child to spot, name and count familiar objects.
