This set gives young children several ways to recognise numerals. Activities may include finding a named number, matching numerals to groups of objects, tracing number shapes and choosing the correct number from a small group. Younger children can focus on familiar numerals with large, clear shapes and plenty of visual support. Children who are ready for more can work with a wider range of numbers, count objects and complete simple number sequences. For focused practice with one numeral, you can also use Number 1 Worksheets or Number 2 Worksheets.
At home, start with one worksheet and ask your child to say each numeral aloud before marking it. Place a few buttons, blocks or pencils beside the page and let your child make the matching group. In class, use a worksheet at a maths centre, during one-to-one support or as a calm follow-up after a counting activity. Sit with younger children and point from left to right. Let older children explain how they know an answer is correct. Short sessions work well, especially when you stop while your child is still interested.
Children may recognise a numeral in one place but miss it when its size, colour or position changes. They may also count a group correctly and then choose a different numeral, or say numbers in order without connecting them to quantities. Ask, "Which number is this?" and then, "Can you make that many?" Give time for your child to look before offering a clue. Trace the numeral in the air, compare it with a familiar number and count objects slowly together. Correct gently, then let your child try the same task again.
They are printable activities that help children identify, name, match and practise written numerals. Some pages connect numerals with groups of counted objects.
These worksheets suit children aged about 2 to 6. Choose pages with large numerals and fewer choices for younger children, then move to mixed numbers and simple sequences as they are ready.
Say one numeral together, find it on the worksheet and match it with a group of objects. Repeat with short sessions and use everyday numbers on calendars, doors and buttons for extra practice.
Reduce the number of choices and compare just two numerals at a time. Ask your child to trace, say and match each one with objects before returning to a mixed activity.
