This set uses clear groups of pictures with one item that is different. Younger children can spot simple differences, such as three fruits and one vehicle, or three large shapes and one small shape. Older preschoolers can look more closely at colour, size, shape, use or category. Some pages can be completed by circling the odd picture, while others invite your child to colour it or explain the choice. The activities give children practice in observing details and grouping things by a shared feature. For a related activity, try Same and Different Worksheets.
At home, begin with one page and ask your child to point to the item that does not belong before using a pencil. Ask, "How do you know?" and accept answers in your child's own words. In a classroom, place a worksheet at a table for quiet practice, or show one row on the board for a short group discussion. Children can work with a partner and take turns explaining their choices. Use the pictures as a speaking activity too, asking children to name each object, colour and category before they circle the odd one.
A common mistake is choosing an item because it looks different in one small way, even when it belongs to the same group. For example, a child may pick a red apple among other fruits because the colours vary. Gently guide your child to check the whole group and ask what three pictures have in common. Some rows may allow more than one sensible answer if the rule is unclear, so use the printed clue or discuss the best shared feature. Praise careful looking and clear explaining rather than quick answers.
They show a group of pictures, shapes or objects with one item that does not share the main feature of the others. The child identifies the different item and may explain the reason.
These worksheets suit children aged 2 to 6. Start with large, familiar pictures and simple categories for younger children, then use differences in size, colour, shape or function for older children.
They practise observation, sorting, vocabulary and early reasoning. Talking about why an item is different also gives your child practice in expressing an idea.
Ask your child to name all the pictures and find what three of them have in common. Compare the choices calmly and let your child try again after discussing the group.
