This set moves from early sound awareness to simple phonics work. Younger children can trace letters, match a letter to a picture and identify the first sound in a familiar word. Older children can sort words by vowel sound, complete missing letters, blend sounds and read short CVC words. The activities use clear pictures and short instructions, so you can choose a suitable sheet for your child's age and confidence. Children who need more practice can repeat a familiar activity, while confident readers can write their own examples.
At home, begin with a quick sound game using objects around the room, then give your child one worksheet to complete. Say each word slowly and let your child point, circle, trace or write before moving on. In class, use a sheet for morning work, a small-group lesson or a quiet review task. Pair children so one child says the word and the other identifies the sound. You can follow these activities with beginning sounds worksheets or middle sounds worksheets when your child is ready.
Children often name the letter instead of saying its sound, especially when a worksheet asks for both. Give the sound first, then ask your child to repeat it and find a matching picture. Some children add an extra vowel sound, saying 'buh' instead of the short /b/ sound. Keep the sound brief and model it in a word such as sun. When blending, encourage your child to point from left to right and join the sounds slowly. If a picture is unfamiliar, name it clearly before asking about its first, middle or final sound.
They give children practice with letter sounds, sound positions, blending and reading or writing simple words. The activities can support short lessons at home or in class.
Many children can begin simple letter and sound activities around age 3. Start with matching and tracing, then move to blending and CVC words as your child is ready.
Say a sound clearly, connect it to a familiar word and ask your child to listen for it. Short, regular practice with these worksheets works well alongside reading simple books aloud.
Return to one sound at a time and use familiar words and objects. Say the sound slowly, ask your child to repeat it, then let them find or write the matching letter.
