A gentle start to animal learning

This set brings together clear animal charts and posters for early learners and primary children. Younger children can point to familiar animals, repeat names and match animals with simple sounds. Children in LKG, UKG and Class 1 can sort animals into groups such as farm, wild, water and pet animals. Older children can talk about habitats, body coverings, diets and animal babies. Large pictures, readable labels and uncluttered layouts help children focus on one idea at a time. Choose one chart for a short activity, or display a few together as a reference corner.

Ideas for home and classroom use

Place a chart near your child's books and spend five minutes naming three animals each day. Ask your child to find an animal that lives in water, has feathers or eats grass. In class, give small groups animal picture cards and ask them to sort the cards before checking the chart. Use a poster for a circle-time talk, then invite children to draw their favourite animal and add its name. You can also play a sound game, act like an animal, or make a simple class book with one animal fact on each page.

Helping children notice the right details

Young children sometimes call every large animal a wild animal, or confuse an animal's home with its habitat. They may also mix up similar names, such as a goat and a sheep, or say that all birds fly. Help by asking one clear question at a time and pointing to a visible feature, such as horns, feathers, fins or fur. Use familiar examples from India, including a cow, elephant, tiger, peacock and fish. Gently explain that some animals have special features and habits, while exceptions can be discussed when your child is ready.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by covering most of a chart and naming just two animals for your child to compare.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to group animals in two different ways, such as by habitat and by body covering.
  • Link learning to real life by spotting birds, insects and domestic animals near your home and comparing them with the chart.
