A child asks a black sheep if it has any wool. The sheep says it has three bags full. One bag is for the master, who owns the sheep. One bag is for the dame, who lives at the house. The last bag is for the little boy who lives down the lane. The sheep has worked hard to provide wool for everyone. Children can picture the soft wool, the sheep in the field and the homes nearby as they say the rhyme together. The rhyme reminds us that useful things can be shared with care and gratitude.
Say the rhyme slowly first, then repeat it with a gentle tune. Pause after each line so your child can finish familiar words such as sheep, wool and full. Show the pictures and ask your child to find the sheep, the bags and the people. Talk about where wool comes from and how it may be used to make warm clothes. For younger children, accept pointing and single-word answers. Older preschoolers can retell who receives each bag and count to three. Nursery Rhymes for Kids has more rhymes to read together.
Let your child colour a sheep using black, grey or another favourite colour, then add a bright background for the field. Use three paper bags or drawn circles to act out the three bags of wool. Ask your child to match each bag to the master, dame and little boy. Practise the letter S with words such as sheep and soft, or clap the syllables in ba-na-na and wool-len. A simple role-play works well too: one child can be the sheep while others receive the bags and say thank you.
It is a nursery rhyme about a sheep with three bags of wool. The wool is shared between the master, the dame and the little boy who lives down the lane.
The rhyme suits children from about 2 to 5 years. Younger children can sing and point, while older preschoolers can retell the rhyme and complete simple matching tasks.
It introduces simple rhyme, repetition, counting to three and the idea of sharing a useful item with others.
Sing the rhyme together, show a sheep picture and ask your child to identify the three recipients of the wool. Follow with colouring, matching or a short role-play.
