Jack and Jill went up a hill to fetch a pail of water. They walked together, carrying the empty pail as they climbed. Near the top, Jack fell down and hurt his crown. Jill came tumbling after him. The children may imagine the pail rolling away and the pair carefully making their way home. This short rhyme has a clear beginning, middle and end, so young children can follow it with actions and pictures. Talk about walking safely and asking a grown-up for help when someone gets hurt. Lesson: take care on unfamiliar paths and help a friend who falls.
Read one or two lines at a time, then pause so your child can repeat the last word or join in with an action. Point to Jack, Jill, the hill, the pail and the crown in the pictures. Ask simple questions such as, "Who went up the hill?" and "What were they fetching?" Let your child retell the rhyme in their own words, even if the order is not exact. Use a slow voice for climbing and a gentle change in tone for the tumble. For more rhymes to share, see Nursery Rhymes for Kids.
Invite your child to colour the hill, pail and two children, then point to each item while saying its name. Cut out simple story pictures and help your child place them in order from going up to coming down. Older preschoolers can trace Jack, Jill, hill, pail and crown, or copy the first letter of each word. Act out the rhyme with a small cup as the pail and a cushion as the hill, using safe, slow movements. Count the steps to a low mound in a park or garden and talk about how water is carried at home.
