Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, looking out from his high seat. He sat there quietly for a while. Then he had a great fall and landed on the ground. The King's horses came to help. The King's men came too. They tried to put Humpty Dumpty together again, but they could not. The rhyme ends with Humpty still unable to be put back together. Children can retell the simple sequence using the pictures: sitting, falling, helping and trying again. Lesson: Take care in high places and ask a grown-up for help when you are hurt.
Read the rhyme slowly, then pause after each main event. Let your child repeat the short lines, clap to the rhythm and point to Humpty, the wall, the horses and the men. Ask, "Where was Humpty sitting?" and "What happened next?" Talk about safe places to sit and why climbing a wall needs a grown-up nearby. You can use a soft toy or a paper egg to act out the story. Keep the conversation gentle, since the rhyme has a fall but no graphic detail.
Help your child put picture cards in story order, then retell the rhyme in their own words. Invite them to colour Humpty, the wall and the helpers, using any colours they like. Make a paper egg and add a few drawn lines for cracks, or build a low wall with blocks and place a toy egg beside it rather than dropping it. Older children can copy the words Humpty Dumpty, match simple pictures to words or draw a safe place where they like to sit.
It tells of Humpty Dumpty sitting on a wall, having a fall and being unable to be put together again by the King's horses and men.
The short, repeated rhyme suits children from about 2 to 5 years. Younger children can join in with actions, while older children can retell the sequence.
Children can practise listening, memory, rhythm and story order. The rhyme also gives you a simple way to talk about safe climbing and asking for help.
