A sunny set for different ages

This set takes children from a simple round sun to more detailed sun drawings with rays, clouds, skies and outdoor scenes. Younger children can trace bold shapes, add short rays and colour within large spaces. Older children can practise curved lines, plan a balanced design and add a horizon, trees, flowers or a morning sky. Some pages give clear steps, while others leave room for children to create their own sun. The pages sit alongside other drawing practice, such as How to Draw a Flower and How to Draw a Tree.

Ideas for home and class

At home, let your child choose a page after a short look outside at the sky. They can draw the sun first, then add what they see, such as clouds, birds, rooftops or plants. In class, use the pages for a morning art activity, a weather chart extension or a display about light and shadows. Invite children to compare warm colours such as yellow, orange and red, without insisting that every sun looks the same. For a small group, one child can draw the circle, another can add rays and everyone can colour the shared scene.

Help with circles, rays and spacing

Children often press too hard, make the circle very small or place rays so close together that they merge. Show your child how to use a light touch for the first circle and leave a little space between each ray. Rays can be straight, wavy, short or long, so there is no need to correct every difference. If the page has a sun in a scene, help your child decide where the sun sits before adding other details. A simple verbal guide, such as circle, space, ray, check, can keep the steps manageable.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by giving your child a round lid to lightly trace before adding the sun's rays.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to show a sunrise, midday sun and sunset using different line styles and colours.
  • Link the activity to real life by looking at the length and direction of shadows at different times of day.

Questions parents ask

How do you draw a simple sun for a child?

Start with a large circle, then add evenly spaced lines around it for rays. Your child can use short straight rays first and try wavy or alternating rays later.

What colours can children use for a sun drawing?

Yellow, orange and red are common choices, but children can use any colours for an imaginative picture. They can also show a pale morning sun or a deep orange evening sun.

How can I help my child draw a round sun?

Ask your child to draw lightly and slowly, or trace around a round household object. The circle does not need to be exact for the picture to work.

Can older children add more detail to a sun drawing?

Yes. They can vary the length of the rays, add clouds and a landscape, or show how sunlight falls on trees, buildings and people.

How do I download or print these sun drawing pages?

Create a free EarlyActivity account to download printables. Most printables are free, and free accounts can download up to 20 printables a day. Print the PDF at Actual size, or 100 percent, on A4 or US Letter paper.
