How to choose stories & rhymes

Stories, Rhymes and Reading Choices

This category brings together traditional stories and simple reading material in clear groups. You can choose Moral Stories, Panchatantra Stories, Akbar and Birbal Stories, Tenali Raman Stories, Jataka Tales, Fairy Tales and Fables, Bedtime Stories, Nursery Rhymes, Poems for Kids or Early Readers. Familiar examples include The Thirsty Crow, The Monkey and the Crocodile, The Monkey King and Aesop's Fables. The groups make it easier to find a story for a particular theme, reading time or classroom topic. Some pages invite listening and discussion, while others support children who are beginning to read on their own.

Choosing by Age and Reading Level

For children aged 2 to 4, start with short nursery rhymes, poems, picture-led stories and simple bedtime tales. Children in LKG, UKG and Class 1 may enjoy repeated lines, familiar animals and early readers with short sentences. For Class 2 to 5, try longer moral stories, Panchatantra Stories, Jataka Tales, Akbar and Birbal Stories or Tenali Raman Stories. Read a new story aloud first if the words are difficult. Ask younger children to name pictures or repeat a line. Ask older children to retell the plot, explain the lesson or write a different ending.

Using Stories at Home and in Class

At home, read one short story before sleep and ask your child which action was kind, clever or unhelpful. A child can draw a favourite scene, put three events in order or act out a conversation with a sibling. In class, read a tale aloud, then use it for speaking practice, sequencing, vocabulary or a short writing task. Nursery rhymes work well for group recitation and rhythm practice. You can pair The Thirsty Crow with a simple problem-solving discussion, or compare the choices made by characters in two fables.
