About phonics

Phonics topics arranged by sound and word skill

The phonics section starts with sound awareness, including beginning sounds, ending sounds, middle sounds, and rhyming words. It then moves through short vowels, long vowels, CVC words, word families, consonant blends, digraphs, silent E, vowel teams, and syllables. You can choose focused pages such as Short A or SH CH TH Digraphs, or use the main phonics worksheets when you want varied practice. Each topic page keeps one skill together, so you can pick a suitable worksheet without sorting through unrelated activities.

Choose pages by age and reading level

For children aged 3 to 5, begin with beginning sounds, matching pictures to letters, simple rhyming tasks, and short A, E, I, O, or U activities. Children aged 5 to 6 may be ready for CVC words, middle sounds, ending sounds, and word families such as AT, AN, and AP. For children aged 6 to 8, try long vowels, silent E, consonant blends, digraphs, vowel teams, syllables, and less familiar word families. Start with a few easy examples, then move to pages that require reading or writing words.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, choose one page after a short read-aloud or letter-sound practise session. Ask your child to say each sound aloud before writing, and let them use a pencil, crayon, or coloured pencil. In class, use a worksheet as morning work, a small-group activity, or a quick review before story time. You can cut out word or picture cards from a page for matching games. For extra support, read the instructions and provide a word bank. For added challenge, ask the child to write a new word with the same sound or word family.
