Star shapes for different ages

This set includes clear star outlines in a range of sizes and styles. Younger children can colour large, bold shapes or trace around them with adult help. Children in primary classes can practise careful cutting, compare points and make repeating patterns. Older children can use the outlines for layered decorations, greeting cards, paper garlands or a simple maths activity about symmetry. The shapes leave room for crayons, paint, collage materials and pencil patterns. Use a shape templates page alongside these star templates when you want children to compare different flat shapes.

Craft ideas for home and class

At home, your child can colour stars in a chosen colour scheme and glue them onto a birthday card, reading corner sign or bedroom notice board. In class, cut out a group of stars for a name display, a seasonal classroom border or a pattern-making table. Children can sort the shapes by size, arrange them from smallest to largest, or place them into a night-sky collage. For a Diwali activity, use paper stars as part of a hanging decoration with adult help and safe materials. Older pupils may add a short wish, kind word or goal to each finished star.

Helping children cut star points neatly

Star points can be tricky because the scissors must change direction at each corner. A common mistake is cutting across a point or turning the paper too quickly. Show your child how to keep the scissors mostly steady while slowly turning the paper with the other hand. Younger children can start with larger stars and fewer, wider points. Encourage older children to follow the outline first and check the inner corners before adding colour or collage. If a cut is uneven, keep the piece and turn it into a layered star, a pattern tile or part of a larger picture.

Lumi's tips

  • For an easier start, let your child trace around a large star and decorate it before trying to cut it out.
  • For a harder challenge, ask older children to create a repeating border using stars in two sizes and three colours.
  • Keep it connected to real life by using finished stars as gift tags, classroom labels or reminders for a family celebration.

Questions parents ask

What can children do with star templates?

Children can colour, trace, cut and decorate the stars. Use them for cards, garlands, collages, displays, gift tags and simple pattern activities.

Are these star templates suitable for preschool children?

Yes. Choose large, bold outlines for children aged 3 to 5, and provide help with cutting. Older children can use smaller shapes and more detailed craft ideas.

How can I use star templates in a maths activity?

Ask children to count the points, sort stars by size, find lines of symmetry or make repeating patterns. Older pupils can compare regular and irregular star shapes.

Can I download and print these star templates?

Yes. Most EarlyActivity printables are free to download with a free account. The files are PDFs for A4 and US Letter paper, and you can print them at home or in your own classroom.

What materials work well with star templates?
