Planets for different ages

This set includes clear planet outlines, close-up views and scenes with several planets together. Younger children can colour large shapes and practise naming Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Older children can add colour patterns, label the planets or compare their sizes. The pictures give children room to use familiar colours while leaving space for their own ideas. A short colouring session works well for ages 4 to 6, while children up to age 12 can turn the sheets into a small space study activity.

Ideas for home and class

At home, let your child choose one planet each day and talk about its name while they colour. Ask them to put finished pages in order from the Sun, then make a simple wall display. In class, use the pages after a lesson on space, or give each child a planet to colour for a group solar system project. Children can write one fact below their picture, sort the planets into rocky and gas planets, or work in pairs to check the order.

Small facts about our planets

The eight planets travel around the Sun in paths called orbits. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are rocky planets, while Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are much larger outer planets. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, and Saturn is well known for its bright rings. Earth is the planet we live on, and it has liquid water on its surface. These simple facts can give your child ideas for colours, labels and a short caption under each finished picture.

Lumi's tips

  • For younger children, name each planet aloud and offer two or three colour choices before they begin.
  • For older children, ask them to colour the planets in order from the Sun and add their names or one accurate fact.
  • After colouring, help your child look at a book or model of the solar system and compare each planet with the picture.

They are printable pictures of planets and space scenes for children to colour. The activity can also support planet names, order and simple space vocabulary.

Which planets can children colour?

Children can colour all eight planets in our solar system, including rocky inner planets and the larger outer planets. Some pictures may show planets alone, while others place them in a solar system scene.
