Rhino pictures for different ages

This set includes friendly rhinos in clear scenes, from large simple outlines for younger children to pictures with grass, trees, water and other details for older children. Young artists can practise staying inside broad shapes and choosing colours for the animal, ground and sky. Older children can add shadows, patterns and background details. The pages sit well beside other wild animal activities, such as elephant coloring pages and lion coloring pages.

Ideas for home and class

At home, read a short fact about rhinos before your child colours, then ask them to name the body parts they can see, such as the horn, ears, eyes and feet. In class, use a finished page as the start of a wildlife vocabulary display. Children can label the rhino, draw plants it might eat, or compare its size and body shape with another wild animal. For a small group activity, let each child choose a different background and share why their rhino lives there.

Three simple rhino facts

Rhinos eat plants such as grass, leaves and shoots. Their horns are made of keratin, the same material found in human hair and fingernails. The Indian rhinoceros has one horn and thick folds of skin that look like armour. You can tell your child that this rhino lives in parts of India, including Assam, while other rhino species live in different parts of Africa and Asia. Keep the facts simple and use the colouring time to talk about caring for wild animals and their habitats.

Lumi's tips

  • For a younger child, name each body part and offer two or three colour choices before they begin.
  • For an older child, ask them to add a natural habitat with plants, mud, water and a distant hill.
  • Keep it fun by inviting your child to make a rhino footprint trail or compare their page with a picture in a wildlife book.
