The set introduces familiar body parts such as eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, feet, knees and tummy. Each card should have a clear picture and an easy-to-read word, so younger children can point and repeat while older preschoolers begin to recognise the labels. Use a few cards at a time with a two-year-old, then add more as your child becomes comfortable. Children aged 4 to 6 can sort the cards, match pictures to words and use them in short sentences such as, "I hear with my ears."
Begin with a point-and-say game. Hold up a card, name the body part and ask your child to touch it on their own body. Place three cards on the floor and ask for one, such as, "Find the foot." In a classroom, children can work in pairs, taking turns to pick a card and lead an action. You can also place the cards in a small bag for a guessing game, or use them beside Animal Flashcards to compare animal body parts with our own.
Young children may mix up pairs such as hands and feet, or call a whole leg a knee. Say the word slowly, point to the correct part and give your child time to repeat it. Use both sides of the body when you practise, saying left hand and right hand only when your child is ready. Keep the tone calm and matter-of-fact. Body parts are ordinary words, and children should learn that every safe, private body part can be named without shame. For personal safety, teach that some parts are private and that trusted adults can help.
These cards suit children aged 2 to 6. Younger children can point and repeat, while older children can match words, sort cards and make short sentences.
Show one card, say the word and ask your child to point to that body part. Add matching, sorting, movement games or simple sentences as your child gains confidence.
Begin with familiar parts that children can easily see and touch, such as eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands and feet. Add knees, elbows and other words gradually.
Yes. Use correct, calm words for all body parts, including private parts, and explain that some parts are private. Also teach your child to speak to a trusted adult if someone makes them uncomfortable.
