Simple schedules for growing children

This set includes picture-based routine charts, step-by-step strips, checklists and blank templates for personalising a child's day. Younger children can follow large pictures for familiar actions such as waking up, brushing teeth, dressing and eating. Older children can read short labels, arrange activities in order and tick or colour each step. The templates suit Nursery, LKG, UKG and primary classrooms, as well as home routines. Choose just a few activities at first, then add more when your child is ready to manage the chart with less help.

Use the chart through the day

Place a morning schedule near the bedroom or bathroom, and keep an after-school chart where your child can see it. In class, use a shared routine board for arrival, learning time, snack, play and pack-up. Let your child move a clip, turn over a card or tick a box after each activity. A Morning Routine Chart can support the first part of the day, while a Daily Routine Chart for Kids can cover home and school together. Talk through changes before they happen.

Help children follow the order

Children may skip a step, focus only on a favourite activity or become upset when the plan changes. Keep the first schedule short and use words your child already knows. Point to the current picture, say what is happening now and then show what comes next. If an activity is not possible, cross it out calmly and add a replacement picture. Avoid filling the chart with too many instructions. Praise the effort of checking the schedule, rather than expecting every step to happen without reminders.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by using only three or four familiar activities and adding a simple finished pocket or tick box.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to put mixed-up routine cards in order and explain what comes next.
  • Keep it connected to real life by letting your child help choose the pictures for a weekend outing, school day or family visit.

Questions parents ask

What is a visual schedule for kids?

It is a chart that shows daily activities in order using pictures, words or both. It helps a child see what is happening now and what comes next.

What age can a child use a visual schedule?

Children from about age 2 can begin with a few large pictures and adult guidance. Children aged 4 to 8 can usually use more steps, labels and checkboxes as their reading and independence grow.

How do I start using a visual schedule at home?

Begin with one familiar routine, such as getting ready in the morning. Show the first picture, guide your child to complete it, and then point to the next one.

Can a visual schedule help when plans change?

Yes. Show the change before the activity begins and replace, cross out or move the affected picture. A short explanation and a clear new next step can make the change easier to follow.
