Templates for young and older readers

The set includes simple formats for pre-readers and early writers, along with fuller pages for children who can write a short book response. Younger children can draw the cover, a favourite character or a memorable scene. Older children can record the title and author, describe the setting, retell key events and give reasons for their opinion. Some pages offer open spaces, while others use clear prompts to guide children who are unsure what to write.

Use them after story time or independent reading

At home, read a picture book together and complete a page while the story is fresh. Your child might draw one scene, name the main character and tell you the ending for you to write down. In class, use a template after silent reading, a read-aloud session or a small-group book discussion. Keep completed reports in a reading folder, or display a few with the books that inspired them. Pair the activity with a Reading Log when your child is reading several books.

Help children give clear answers

Children often retell every event instead of choosing the most important parts. Ask, What changed in the story, or Which part would you tell a friend about? They may also mix up the author and illustrator, so check the book cover together before they begin. For opinion prompts, encourage a reason rather than a single word such as good. A sentence frame like I liked this book because helps younger writers explain their thinking.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by reading the prompts aloud and letting your child answer orally before drawing or writing.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to compare two characters, identify a lesson or support an opinion with an event from the book.
  • Keep it connected to real life by having your child recommend a completed book report to a family member or classmate.

Questions parents ask

What is a book report template?

A book report template is a guided page that helps a child record details about a book and share a response. It may include space for drawing, characters, events, favourite parts and an opinion.

What should a child include in a book report?

A child can include the book title, author, main characters, setting, important events and a personal opinion. The amount of writing should match the child's age and reading experience.

Are these book report templates suitable for preschool children?

Yes. The simpler pages use drawing, colouring and short oral prompts, so a young child can respond to a story before writing full sentences. An adult can write the child's words when needed.

How do I download and print a book report template?

Most EarlyActivity printables are free to download with a free account. The files are PDFs for A4 and US Letter paper, and you can print them at Actual size, or 100%.

Can I use these templates in my classroom?

Yes. You may print them for use at home or in your own classroom. You can pair a report with a [Homework Planner](/planners-templates/school-printables/homework-planner/) for a reading task, but sharing or reselling the files is not allowed.
