What children will practise

This set introduces familiar animal families such as cow and calf, dog and puppy, cat and kitten, hen and chick, sheep and lamb, and lion and cub. Younger children can identify pictures, draw lines between pairs, colour, and trace simple words. Children who are ready for more can read the baby animal names, complete missing letters, sort pairs, or write short answers. The activities use clear pictures and simple instructions, so you can choose a suitable sheet for Nursery, LKG, UKG, or early primary practice. Pair these pages with Animals Worksheets for wider animal vocabulary work.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, begin with a conversation about animals your child has seen near home, on a farm, or in a picture book. Say each parent and baby name aloud, then let your child complete one activity without rushing. In class, place picture cards or toy animals in a small group and ask children to find the matching babies before they work on paper. Older children can read the words to a partner, use one pair in a sentence, or make a mini animal family chart. You can revisit the same vocabulary during story time or an EVS discussion.

Helping with common mix-ups

Children often know the adult animal but confuse baby names such as calf, foal, lamb, and kid. They may also match by size or colour rather than by the correct family. Ask your child to say the full pair, such as horse and foal, each time they draw a line. If a word is difficult, cover the picture and give the first sound, or let your child choose from two spoken options. Remind children that some baby names are special words, so they cannot always be guessed by adding a common ending such as baby or little.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by starting with three large picture pairs and saying each animal name slowly before your child matches them.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to write a sentence using two pairs, such as A cow has a calf.
  • Keep it connected to real life by noticing birds, dogs, cats, goats, or other animals near your home and talking about their young.
