What children learn in this set

The worksheets introduce the five sense organs and connect each one with a familiar job. Younger children can trace words, match pictures and colour simple outlines. Older children can label the organs, sort objects by the sense they use and complete short sentences. Clear pictures and repeated practice help children remember that eyes help us see, ears help us hear, the nose helps us smell, the tongue helps us taste and the skin helps us feel touch. For a wider review, you can pair this set with Five Senses Worksheets.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, begin with a short conversation about what your child can see, hear, smell, taste and feel around the room. Complete one activity, then ask your child to find a real example, such as a soft towel for touch or a bell for hearing. In class, use the pages after a science or EVS discussion. Children can work alone, with a partner or in small groups. Keep crayons nearby for younger learners, and let older children explain why an object belongs with a particular sense organ.

Clear up common mix-ups

Children often name a sense instead of the organ, saying 'seeing' when the answer is 'eyes'. Some may also think that the tongue does all the work of tasting or that skin is only found on the hands. Use short, repeated sentences to link the organ to its job. Point to the relevant body part while speaking, then ask your child to point to it on themselves. Remind children that one object can use more than one sense, such as a flower that we can see, smell and touch.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by reading the labels aloud and asking your child to draw a line from each organ to its matching action.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to write a new example for each sense organ.
  • Keep it connected to daily life by taking a quiet five-sense walk around your home or classroom before completing a worksheet.
