The set introduces the eight commonly taught Moon phases through clear pictures, matching tasks, tracing, labelling and simple questions. Younger children can colour the Moon, match a name to a picture and arrange a short sequence. Older children can complete phase wheels, read observation notes, compare waxing and waning shapes, and explain why the Moon seems to change. The activities use familiar language while giving children useful science vocabulary such as new moon, crescent, quarter, gibbous and full moon.
At home, begin with a short look at the evening sky and ask your child to draw the Moon they see. Use a worksheet afterwards to compare the drawing with the labelled phases. In class, groups can hold phase cards in order, then complete a sequencing or labelling activity. A simple Moon diary over two weeks gives children a reason to return to the topic. You can pair this set with Day and Night Worksheets or Solar System Worksheets for a wider space and Earth lesson.
Children often think the Moon makes its own light or that Earth's shadow causes every phase. Explain that sunlight lights the Moon, and we see different portions of its sunlit half as the Moon moves around Earth. An eclipse is a separate event, so it should not be used to explain the regular phase cycle. Children may also mix up waxing and waning, or place the quarter phases in the wrong order. Let them use a torch, a ball and a darkened room to model light and shadow before they correct their worksheet.
Children learn to identify, name and order the Moon's main phases. They also practise observing shapes, using science vocabulary and understanding that sunlight lights the Moon.
The commonly taught sequence is new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent.
Children from about age 5 can match, colour and sequence simple Moon pictures. Children up to age 12 can work with phase names, waxing and waning, observation records and simple explanations.
Use a ball and a torch to show that the lit part stays on the side facing the light. Waxing means the visible lit part grows, while waning means it becomes smaller.
