A hare laughed at a tortoise for moving so slowly. The tortoise calmly asked the hare to race. The hare ran far ahead and felt sure he would win, so he stopped beside the path and fell asleep. The tortoise kept walking, one small step at a time. He passed the sleeping hare and reached the finish line first. When the hare woke, he ran quickly, but he was too late. The tortoise had won because he continued while the hare wasted time. Lesson: Slow, steady work can beat careless rushing.
Read each fable aloud first, using a different voice for the animals. Pause when a character makes a choice and ask your child what might happen next. After the ending, talk about the lesson without suggesting that there is only one right answer. Ask, "Was the hare confident or careless?" and "What could he have done differently?" Your child can retell the story using the pictures, name the beginning, middle, and end, or act out two characters. Younger children may answer with one word or point to a picture. Older children can explain the lesson in their own words.
Use the printables for more than one sitting. Your child can colour the animals, match each character to an action, put story scenes in order, or trace a short sentence about the lesson. Make animal masks from paper and act out the fable with a family member or small group. Ask your child to draw a new ending, such as the hare walking beside the tortoise. For a real-life link, choose a small task at home, such as sorting socks or putting away books, and practise doing it steadily without rushing. You can also compare these fables with Fairy Tales for Kids.
They are short animal stories traditionally linked with Aesop. Each story usually ends with a simple lesson about choices, behaviour, or how we treat others.
Short stories such as The Tortoise and the Hare, The Lion and the Mouse, The Ant and the Grasshopper, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf work well when read aloud and discussed together.
Read the story first, then ask your child what each character did and what happened next. Invite them to explain the lesson in their own words and give a simple example from daily life.
