Old MacDonald lived on a farm with fields, a barn and many animals. Each day, he cared for them and listened to their sounds. The cow said moo, the pig said oink, the duck said quack and the horse said neigh. More animals joined the farm as Old MacDonald sang, E-I-E-I-O. Children can join in with the repeated line and make each animal sound. The farm was a busy, friendly place where every animal had a part to play. Lesson: Caring for animals takes kindness, patience and regular work.
Read the story slowly and pause before each animal sound so your child can fill it in. Point to the animal, say its name clearly and invite your child to copy the sound or movement. Ask which animal came first, which one they like best and what the animal might eat. You can sing the familiar refrain softly, or speak it if your child is still learning the words. After reading, use Nursery Rhymes for Kids to choose another short rhyme for your next reading time.
Let your child colour the animals with realistic or imaginative colours, then name each one. Place animal pictures in story order and retell the rhyme using the repeated refrain. Try a listening game in which you make one animal sound and your child points to the matching picture. For a simple maths link, count the animals in a picture or sort them by size. At home, look for birds, cows or other animals near you, and compare their sounds with the ones in the rhyme. Older preschoolers can trace animal names or draw a new farm animal.
It is a nursery rhyme about a farmer and the animals on his farm. Each verse names an animal and repeats the sound it makes.
Common versions include a cow, pig, duck, horse and sheep. You can add other familiar farm animals when singing or using the printables.
The rhyme suits young children from about 2 to 5 years. Toddlers can copy sounds and actions, while older preschoolers can sequence pictures and retell the story.
Read or sing one verse at a time, pause for your child to make the animal sound, and use pictures to retell the order. Add colouring, counting or movement for a short follow-up activity.
