Rain clouds cover the sky, and rain begins to fall. The children look outside and wish the rain would stop so they can play. They ask the rain to go away and come back another day. The rhyme also speaks to the rain as if it were a visitor who can listen and choose when to leave. Children may imagine waiting by the window, watching drops slide down the glass, then stepping outside when the ground is dry. The simple words and repeated request make the rhyme easy to say together. Lesson: Some things cannot be hurried, so we can wait calmly for a better time.
Say the rhyme slowly once, then invite your child to repeat the final words with you. Tap gently for each beat, or pause before "another day" and let your child finish the line. Look at the pictures and ask, "What can you see in the sky?" and "What would you do on a rainy day?" Accept drawing, pointing or one-word answers. Talk about safe places to stay during heavy rain and how rain helps plants grow. You can pair this set with Nursery Rhymes for Kids for another short reading session.
Let your child colour clouds, raindrops, umbrellas and puddles, using any colours they like. Make a sound pattern with two fingers tapping the table for rain and soft claps for "go away". Sort picture cards into things used in rain and things used in sunshine. Draw a window view and add the weather outside today. For a simple movement game, curl up like a cloud, wiggle fingers like falling rain, then stretch up like a bright sun. Older children can draw three pictures to retell the rhyme in order or dictate a new final line.
It is a short nursery rhyme in which children ask the rain to stop so they can play. They invite it to return another day.
The rhyme suits toddlers and preschool children, especially ages 2 to 5. Younger children can listen and join in with repeated words, while older preschoolers can retell the events.
Children practise listening, speaking, rhythm, repeated language and simple weather words. The rhyme also gives you an easy way to talk about waiting and rainy-day safety.
Read it during circle time, add finger movements for falling rain and let children colour a related picture. You can follow it with a weather chart or a discussion about indoor play.
