Activities for early learners

This set gives young children several ways to meet the letter S. Simple pages focus on spotting, colouring, and matching uppercase S with lowercase s. Tracing paths and guided writing help children practise the shape when their hands are ready. Sound activities connect S with familiar words such as sun, sock, star, snake, and spoon. A child aged 2 or 3 may work with one large letter and a crayon, while children aged 4 to 6 can attempt word work, beginning sounds, and independent writing. Start with the easiest page and stop while your child is still comfortable.

Use them at home or in class

At home, choose one activity for a short sitting and say the letter name and sound together. After a tracing page, ask your child to find three things that begin with the S sound, such as a spoon, shoe, or soap. In class, place a few S picture cards near the worksheet table and invite children to sort them from pictures that begin with other sounds. Let children colour selected pictures, then share their choices with the group. You can use the pages alongside Letter A Worksheets or Letter B Worksheets for regular alphabet practice.

Help with the shape and sound of S

Children sometimes reverse S, make sharp corners instead of a smooth curve, or say the letter name when asked for its sound. Model a slow S in the air, starting at the top and moving down in one flowing motion. Use a finger to trace the printed letter before asking for pencil work. For the sound, stretch the beginning of sun or sock and let your child repeat it. Keep words simple and listen carefully, since some children may confuse S with C when they hear the sound. Praise careful listening and effort rather than speed.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by covering most of the worksheet and working with one large S at a time.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to write a capital S and a small s, then draw a picture of an S word.
  • Keep it fun by going on a short S hunt around your home or classroom before starting the worksheet.
