Practice for different learning stages

This set moves from simple recognition to sentence building. Younger children can circle or match common conjunctions such as and, but and or. Older children can complete sentences, join two ideas, choose a suitable conjunction and write their own examples using because, so, while or when. The tasks use familiar situations, so your child can focus on how the joining word changes the meaning. Begin with an easier sheet, then move to a writing task when your child is ready. Children who need revision can return to the matching and gap-fill activities.

Use the worksheets at home or in class

At home, read each sentence aloud before your child writes. Ask your child to explain why a chosen conjunction fits, then make one funny sentence together. In class, use a worksheet for independent work after a short board lesson. Pairs can compare answers and read completed sentences to each other. A useful follow-up is to write two simple sentences on slips of paper and ask children to join them in more than one way. You can pair this practice with Verbs Worksheets when children need help understanding the actions in a sentence.

Help children notice meaning

Children often choose and for every gap because it is the first joining word they learn. Show that but signals a contrast, or gives a choice, because gives a reason and so gives a result. Read both possible sentences aloud and ask which meaning sounds right. Commas can also cause confusion in longer sentences, so first focus on choosing the correct conjunction. If a sentence sounds incomplete, ask your child to identify the two ideas being joined. Encourage complete sentences rather than guessing from the word length or position.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by giving your child two possible conjunctions to choose from before asking for an open answer.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to join the same two ideas with different conjunctions and explain how the meaning changes.
  • Keep it lively by collecting conjunctions from everyday talk, storybooks and classroom instructions, then making a sentence with each one.

Questions parents ask

What is a conjunction?

A conjunction is a word that joins words, phrases or parts of a sentence. Common examples include and, but, or, because, so and when.

Which conjunctions should children learn first?

Children usually begin with and, but and or. As they become more confident, introduce because, so, when, if and while through short, meaningful sentences.

How can I help my child choose the right conjunction?

Ask your child to say the two ideas separately, then explain the relationship between them. A reason needs because, a result may need so, and a contrast often needs but.

Are these conjunctions worksheets suitable for school use?

Yes. They can be used for guided practice, independent work, revision or a short assessment in Nursery, primary and junior school settings, with the task chosen to suit the class.
