Activities for different ages

The set starts with familiar pairs such as big and small, hot and cold, up and down, and happy and sad. Younger children can match pictures, circle the correct word and complete simple pairs. Older children can write the opposite, sort words into groups and use both words in sentences. The tasks move from recognition to independent writing, so you can choose a suitable sheet for your child's level. Children in Nursery or early primary classes may need help reading the words, while children in Classes 2 to 5 can work with less familiar vocabulary.

Simple ways to use the sheets

At home, begin with an oral warm-up. Say a word such as 'open' and ask your child to give its opposite before starting the worksheet. Keep a small basket of classroom objects nearby so you can demonstrate full and empty, long and short, or heavy and light. In class, pair children and give each pair a few word cards to sort before they write. You can use a completed sheet for a short review the next day, or ask children to find opposite pairs in a story, their classroom or around the house.

Helping with tricky opposite pairs

Children often choose a word that is related rather than truly opposite. For example, they may say 'blue' for 'red' or 'fast' for 'run'. Explain that opposites show contrasting meanings, then use the word in a short sentence. Some pairs depend on context, such as old and young for people or old and new for objects. Accept familiar alternatives when they make sense, but model the target pair used on the sheet. Ask your child to explain why the two words are opposites, not just memorise the answer.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by reading each word aloud and using a quick picture or gesture before your child chooses an answer.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to write a sentence containing both opposite words.
  • Link the activity to real life by spotting pairs such as open and closed, inside and outside, or clean and dirty during the day.
