What is in this set

This set gives young children several ways to meet number 11. Children can trace the numeral, count groups of objects, match quantities, colour pictures and practise writing the number. The simpler pages suit toddlers and nursery children who are still building pencil control. Older preschoolers and Class 1 children can try number-word work, missing numbers and small counting tasks. Use these worksheets after your child has handled real objects such as blocks or buttons. Children who are ready for earlier practice can begin with the Number 1 Worksheets and move through the sequence.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, begin with a short counting game. Place 11 spoons, toy cars or bottle caps on a mat, count them together, then choose a matching worksheet. Let your child trace with a finger before using a pencil. In class, give pairs of children a basket of counters and ask them to make a group of 11 before they work on paper. You can place one sheet in a maths centre, read the instructions aloud and invite children to colour the objects after counting. Keep the activity short, with time for your child to explain how they found the answer.

Helping with common number 11 mistakes

Children often skip an object while counting a group, count one object twice or stop at 10 because 11 feels like a new pattern. Encourage your child to touch or move each object as they say one number. Show that 11 is made of 10 and 1 more by arranging ten counters in a row and placing one beside them. When writing, children may reverse the 1s or leave a large gap between them. Use a slow model, then let your child copy one numeral at a time without pressure.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by covering most of a busy picture and asking your child to count a small group of 11 objects first.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to find 11 items around the room and record the numeral beside each group.
  • Keep it fun by making a snack group of 10 raisins and adding 1 more before saying and writing 11.
