Phonics practice for different ages

This set moves from hearing and recognising digraphs to reading, tracing and spelling words with them. Younger children can colour pictures, match a sound to a picture and trace large letter pairs. Children who are ready to read can circle the correct digraph, complete simple words and sort words by sound. Older learners can read short sentences, find digraphs in words and write their own examples. The activities can sit alongside Phonics Worksheets for wider sound practice.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, begin by saying the target sound clearly and asking your child to repeat it. Work with one worksheet at a time, then find the same sound in a storybook, food packet or shop sign. In class, place picture and word activities at a phonics station, or use them for quiet practice after a whole-class lesson. Let children work with a partner to read the words aloud. Keep a small list of words they know, and revisit it during the week.

Help with common digraph mistakes

Children often read the two letters separately, so they may say s-h instead of sh. Point to both letters together, say the sound once and have your child blend it into the whole word. Some children confuse ch and sh, or hear th differently in words such as thin and this. Use clear examples and ask your child to listen for the sound at the beginning, middle or end. If spelling is difficult, give the word orally and let your child choose the missing digraph first.

Lumi's tips

  • Start with picture matching and oral sound practice before asking your child to read unfamiliar digraph words.
  • For a harder task, ask your child to write a new word or sentence using each target digraph.
  • Make a digraph hunt by finding sh, ch or th words in a story, label, menu or classroom display.

Questions parents ask

What are digraphs in phonics?

A digraph is a pair of letters that represents one sound. Common examples include sh, ch, th, wh and ph.

Which digraphs should children learn first?

Many children begin with familiar sounds such as sh, ch and th. Introduce new digraphs slowly and give plenty of practice reading them in simple words.

Are these worksheets suitable for preschool children?

Yes. Younger children can use the picture, colouring, matching and tracing activities with an adult. Reading and spelling pages are better suited to children who know some letter sounds.

How can I help my child who confuses ch and sh?

Say the two sounds clearly and ask your child to watch and listen as you model each one. Sort picture cards into ch and sh groups, then read the words together.

How do I download and print these worksheets?

Create a free EarlyActivity account to download the PDFs. Free accounts can download up to 20 printables a day. Print the file at Actual size, or 100%, on A4 or US Letter paper.
