This set gives children several ways to work with the short e sound. Younger children can trace the letter e, say picture names and circle pictures that begin with the sound. Children who are ready to read can match words to pictures, sort short e words and fill in missing letters. Older learners can read short sentences, spell CVC words and spot the short e word in a group. The activities use familiar words such as egg, elephant, hen, leg, pen, red, web and ten, so you can choose a suitable starting point for your child.
At home, begin by saying each picture name slowly and ask your child what sound they hear in the middle. Do one or two examples together, then let your child finish the activity. Keep a small basket of objects or picture cards nearby and ask your child to find something with the short e sound. In class, use a worksheet for quiet practice after a phonics lesson, or let children work in pairs and read their answers aloud. You can follow with a word hunt in a storybook or on labels around the classroom. For related practice, try Beginning Sounds Worksheets or Middle Sounds Worksheets.
Children often confuse short e with short i, especially in words such as hen and hin, or pen and pin. Ask your child to watch your mouth as you say the vowel, then repeat the word slowly without stretching the sound. Some children also leave out the middle vowel when writing CVC words. Use three boxes for the first, middle and last sounds, and have your child push a counter into each box before writing the letters. If a picture name is unclear, say the word aloud and explain its meaning rather than asking your child to guess from the image alone.
Common short e words include bed, hen, leg, pen, red, ten, web and egg. They have the short e vowel sound, as in e in bed.
Say a few simple words slowly and ask your child to listen for the middle sound. Then practise matching the sound to the letter e through pictures, word reading and short spelling activities.
Children around 3 to 5 can begin with picture naming, colouring and tracing. Children around 5 to 8 can try word families, missing letters, reading and simple sentence tasks.
Say the words side by side, such as bed and bid or pen and pin. Have your child listen to the middle vowel and look at the letter in the word.
