Passages for growing readers

This set brings together short reading passages with questions that check recall, vocabulary, sequencing and simple inference. Topics can include animals, nature, school life, daily routines, people at work and short fictional scenes. Younger children can begin with supported reading, picture clues and matching tasks, while Class 5 learners can work with longer passages and write fuller answers. The pages give children practise in finding evidence in a text instead of guessing from the question alone. Read a passage aloud first when your child needs help, then encourage them to read it independently.

Use the worksheets with purpose

At home, ask your child to read the passage quietly and underline the sentence that supports each answer. After checking the work, talk about one new word and use it in a sentence from everyday life. In class, use a passage for shared reading, then let pairs compare their answers and point to the text as proof. You can give younger learners a few questions at a time, while older learners complete the full page and explain how they found an answer. Keep a small reading folder so your child can see which skills need more practise.

Help children read beyond the obvious

Children often copy a whole sentence when a short answer is needed, miss a detail because they read too quickly, or choose an answer that sounds sensible but is not supported by the passage. Ask your child to circle names, dates, action words and important clues before answering. For an inference question, use the prompt, "What does the passage tell us, and what can we work out?" If a word is unfamiliar, let your child read the surrounding sentence before giving the meaning. Praise careful evidence, clear handwriting and a complete response.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by reading the passage aloud first and covering all but two or three questions.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to write a new title, explain an inference and quote the clue that supports it.
  • Keep it connected to real life by asking your child to compare the passage with something seen at home, school or in the local community.
