About sight words

Sight word practice for each level

This subcategory brings together pages for early readers, from first word recognition to sentence practice. Start with Sight Words Worksheets for general practice, then choose Pre-Primer or Primer pages as your child begins reading common words. Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade worksheets offer progressively more reading and writing practice. Sight Word Tracing Worksheets support letter formation and word recall, while Sight Word Sentences Worksheets help children read words in context. The pages are grouped by topic, so you can choose one skill at a time instead of printing a large mixed pack.

Choose a level that suits your child

For a child aged 3 or 4, begin with a few pre-primer words and tracing activities. A child in Nursery, LKG or UKG may practise recognising a word, saying it aloud and copying it. Primer and Kindergarten pages can suit children who are starting to read short phrases. First Grade and Second Grade worksheets are useful when your child can read familiar words and needs more sentence practice. Use your child's present reading ability rather than age alone. If a page feels difficult, return to fewer words, larger writing and oral practice before trying it again.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, print one page for a short 10-minute practice session. Read each word together, let your child trace it, then cover it and ask your child to write or find it. You can place a completed page near the study table for quick revision. In class, use a worksheet as morning work, small-group practice or a quiet follow-up after a phonics lesson. Ask children to circle a target word in a sentence or make a spoken sentence with it. Keep practice light and repeat familiar words across the week.

Download and print from EarlyActivity

Most EarlyActivity printables are free. You need a free account to download them, and a free account can download up to 20 printables a day. Open a topic page, select the worksheet you need and download the PDF. The files are sized for A4 and US Letter paper. In your printer settings, choose Actual size or 100% so the writing lines and word boxes keep their intended size. Print the pages for use at home or in your own classroom. Sharing or reselling the files is not allowed.

Frequently asked questions

What are sight words?

Sight words are common words that children practise recognising quickly when reading. Many cannot be sounded out easily using basic phonics patterns, so repeated reading and writing can help children remember them.

Which sight words should my child learn first?

Begin with a small group of common pre-primer words, such as words your child meets often in beginner books and classroom sentences. Move to primer and grade-level words when your child can recognise the earlier group with less help.

Are these sight word worksheets free?

Most EarlyActivity printables are free. Downloading needs a free account, and free accounts can download up to 20 printables a day.

What age are these sight word worksheets for?

They suit children aged about 3 to 8, with easier tracing and pre-primer pages for early learners and more advanced sentence pages for older children. Choose by reading level as well as age.

How can I help my child practise sight words at home?

Read each word aloud together, let your child trace or copy it, and then use it in a short spoken sentence. A brief practice session repeated across the week is easier to manage than a long worksheet session.

What paper size should I use for printing?

The PDFs are sized for A4 and US Letter paper. Select Actual size or 100% in your printer settings before printing.
