Writing practice for different ages

This set gives children a gentle path from simple ideas to fuller pieces of writing. Younger writers can name characters, finish sentences, choose words and arrange events in order. Older children can plan a setting, add details, write dialogue and develop a beginning, middle and ending. Prompts include familiar situations, imaginative events and everyday observations, so your child can write from experience or make up a story. Children do not need to complete every part at once. You can select a shorter task for a child who is still gaining confidence.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, set aside a quiet 15-minute writing time and let your child talk through ideas before writing. You might use a picture prompt after a family outing, then ask your child to describe one sound, smell or feeling from the day. In class, children can plan independently, share ideas with a partner and write their own version. Use one worksheet for a first draft and return to it later for adding detail, checking spelling and reading aloud. Story writing worksheets can give extra practice when your child is ready to develop a complete story.

Helping children improve their writing

Children often rush into a story without deciding who is in it, where it happens or what changes. A quick planning box can prevent a list of unrelated events. They may also repeat the same adjective, leave out full stops or switch between past and present tense. Ask your child to read the work slowly, pointing to each sentence, and check one feature at a time. First check that the ideas make sense, then look at capital letters, punctuation and spelling. Praise a clear detail or an interesting choice rather than correcting every line at once.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by allowing your child to draw the setting or tell the story aloud before writing.
  • Make it harder by asking for a stronger opening, two descriptive details and a clear ending.
  • Keep it fun by turning a real family event, object or local place into the starting point for a short story.
