Simple stars to detailed space scenes

This set includes large five-pointed stars, groups of stars, shooting stars, starry skies and scenes with the Moon or planets. Younger children can work with broad outlines and open spaces, while older children can add colour patterns, shading and background details. The pictures give children room to choose their own colours, from familiar yellow stars to blue, white or red stars. A few pages can also prompt talk about stars as objects in space.

Colouring ideas for home and class

At home, invite your child to make a night-sky picture with dark blue paper, crayons and a few coloured stars from the printable. In class, use a page as a quiet centre activity, then ask children to share the colours and shapes they chose. Older pupils can label a star, the Moon and a planet, or write two sentences about an imagined trip through space. Pair the activity with Moon Coloring Pages for a small space-themed display.

Three star facts children can remember

The Sun is a star, and it looks larger because it is much closer to Earth than the other stars we see. Stars make their own light and heat, while the Moon shines by reflecting light from the Sun. Groups of stars can look like pictures or patterns in the sky. These patterns are called constellations. After colouring, ask your child to make a new constellation by joining a few stars with light pencil lines.

Lumi's tips

  • For a younger child, point to each star and name its colour before asking them to fill the large spaces.
  • For an older child, encourage a dark-to-light sky background, careful shading and a short caption about the scene.
  • Look at the night sky together and ask your child which shapes, colours or patterns they can spot.
