This set uses clear, familiar sight words in a large, easy-to-read format. Younger children can look at one word at a time, listen to you say it and match it with a simple picture or action. Children who are ready to read can say the word, trace it with a finger and use it in a short phrase. The cards suit children aged 2 to 6, so you can choose only a few at first and add more as your child becomes comfortable.
At home, show one card during a morning routine, then ask your child to spot the same word in a storybook or on a label. Place two or three cards on the floor and ask your child to find the word you say. In class, use the cards for partner turns, a word hunt around the room or a quick review before story time. You can sort cards by words your child knows and words that need more practice. Keep each turn brief and stop while your child is still interested.
Young children may guess from the first letter, confuse small words or forget a word they read yesterday. Gently cover part of a picture if it leads to guessing, point to each letter and say the whole word together. Give extra time before correcting, then use the word in a short sentence such as, "I am here." For words such as in, on, my and me, add a simple action or object so your child connects the word with its meaning, not just its shape.
Sight word flashcards are cards with common words that children practise recognising quickly. They can support early reading before a child can sound out every word.
Children can begin with listening, matching and repeating activities around age 2. Children aged 4 to 6 may be ready to read and use more of the words independently.
Show a small group of cards for a few minutes. Say each word, let your child repeat it, then use it in a simple sentence or ask your child to find it in a book.
Use fewer cards and review them often in short sessions. Pair each word with a spoken sentence, an action or a familiar object, and praise careful looking rather than quick guessing.
