The Golden Goose Story in brief

A poor couple owned a goose that laid one golden egg each day. They were grateful at first and sold the eggs to buy food and other useful things. Soon, the couple grew impatient. They thought there must be many golden eggs inside the goose, so they decided to cut it open and take them all at once. When they did, they found no eggs inside. The goose was dead, and the couple could no longer receive even one golden egg. Their greed had made them lose the steady gift they already had. Lesson: Be patient and thankful, and do not let greed make your choices.

Read, retell and talk together

Read the golden goose story aloud slowly, showing the pictures and pausing when the couple changes their minds. Ask your child what the couple had at the beginning, what they wanted, and what they lost. Younger children can name the characters and put the main events in order. Older children can explain why waiting for one egg each day was wiser than taking a dangerous shortcut. Talk about times when being patient helps at home or school. For another short moral story, you can read The Thirsty Crow Story together.

Activities after the story

Use the printables for colouring, picture sequencing, tracing key words, matching actions to results and answering simple comprehension questions. Ask your child to draw the goose's coop and write one sentence about caring for an animal. Older children can rewrite the ending, make a two-column chart called Wise Choice and Greedy Choice, or write a short diary entry from the couple's point of view. A small role-play can help children retell the story with three parts: the daily egg, the greedy plan and the sad result.

Lumi's tips

  • For younger children, read the story in short parts and let them use pictures or actions to retell what happened.
  • For older children, ask them to compare a patient choice with a quick, greedy choice from everyday life and explain the likely result.
  • Keep it lively by using a paper egg as a prop and placing one egg on the table each time the goose lays one.
