Words for different stages

This word wall collection includes clear charts and posters for young children who are learning letters, sounds and everyday words, along with choices for older children building vocabulary and spelling confidence. Younger learners can use picture-supported words such as colours, animals, family words and classroom objects. Older children can refer to topic words, common spelling patterns, parts of speech and useful words for writing. Keep a small selection at child eye level so the display stays easy to read. Rotate words as your child or class moves to a new theme.

Use the wall for daily learning

At home, choose a few words from the chart for a five-minute reading routine. Ask your child to find a word, say it, clap its syllables or use it in a sentence. In class, place the posters near the writing area and invite children to borrow a word for a story, label or worksheet. You can pair the display with an Alphabet Line for younger children. Add removable word cards beneath a heading such as Our New Words, then review them at the end of the week.

Help children use words, not just see them

A common mistake is treating a word wall as decoration. Children may look at a word but still guess from its first letter, copy it incorrectly or use it without knowing its meaning. Point to the whole word, stretch the sounds and talk about how it works in a sentence. For tricky spellings, compare two related words and mark the part that changes. Ask older children to sort words by meaning, spelling pattern or word class. Leave space for children to add examples, translations or small drawings when they are useful.

Lumi's tips

  • Start with a small group of familiar words and read them together before adding new ones.
  • For older children, ask them to sort the words into nouns, verbs, describing words or topic groups.
  • Connect a word to real life by spotting it in a book, writing it on a shopping list or using it during conversation.

Questions parents ask

What is a word wall used for?

A word wall gives children a visible bank of words to read, spell and use in speaking or writing. It can support phonics, vocabulary, sentence work and topic learning.

What words should I put on a word wall?

Choose words that children meet often or need for current learning. For young children, begin with names, classroom objects, colours and common action words. Older learners can use topic vocabulary, spelling patterns and useful writing words.

How do I make a word wall useful?

Refer to it during real reading and writing tasks instead of leaving it as decoration. Ask children to find a word, read it aloud, explain it or use it in a new sentence.

Can a word wall be used at home?

Yes. Place a few charts near your child's reading or study area and use them for short activities such as word hunts, spelling practice and sentence making. Change the focus when your child's interests or school topics change.

How do I download and print these word wall charts?

Choose a printable on this page and download the PDF using a free EarlyActivity account. Print it for use at home or in your own classroom. Files are made for A4 and US Letter paper, and the print settings should be set to Actual size, or 100%.
