This set gives children repeated practice with totals from 0 to 5. Younger learners can count pictures, join groups and write the answer with support. Older children can work through number sentences, missing addends and mixed questions. The pages use large spaces and uncluttered layouts so children can focus on one small step at a time. If your child is ready for a wider range, try Addition Within 10 after these sums become familiar.
At home, begin with a short oral warm-up. Place two buttons and one button on the table, ask your child to count the total, then complete a matching worksheet sum. In class, children can work alone, with a partner or in a small teacher-led group. Read each question aloud for children who are still learning to read. Keep one page for guided practice and another for independent work. Let children colour selected pictures after checking their answers.
A common mistake is to count only the second group instead of counting both groups together. Ask your child to touch each object once, then count all the objects from the beginning. Some children also write the larger number first without thinking about the groups, so use counters or fingers to show what each number represents. For a sum such as 2 + 3, make two objects, add three more and count the whole group. Later, show that 3 + 2 has the same total.
It means adding two numbers where the answer is 5 or less. Examples include 1 + 2, 2 + 3 and 5 + 0.
They are suitable for many children aged 4 to 8. Younger children may need pictures and counters, while older children can use the pages for revision and fluency practice.
Start with real objects in two groups. Let your child count both groups, say the total aloud and then connect the activity to a written sum.
Ask your child to move each object into a new row or touch it once while counting. A ten-frame, counters or drawn circles can help keep the groups clear.
