What children practise in this set

The worksheets use clear pictures and simple directions to teach the difference between big and small. Younger children can point, circle, colour and match objects, while older children can sort groups, complete comparisons and write the correct word. The activities give children repeated practice with size language without making the page feel crowded. For related measurement work, you can pair these pages with Measurement Worksheets or Tall and Short Worksheets. Choose tasks that suit your child's pencil control and understanding.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, begin with one page and ask your child to name each picture before marking an answer. After the worksheet, find a big book and a small book, or compare two spoons from the kitchen. In class, place children in pairs and give each pair classroom objects to sort before they work independently. Older children can explain why one item is bigger, then draw a smaller item beside it. Keep the activity short for younger children and allow extra time for colouring or talking.

Helping with common size mistakes

Children often choose a picture because it is taller, wider or placed closer to them, rather than comparing its overall size. Some may also think a long object is always big, even when it is thin. Put two real objects side by side and use one clear question at a time, such as which object takes up more space. Point out that the pictures should be compared with each other, not with the size of the printed page. Ask your child to say big or small aloud before circling.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by comparing two very different objects first, such as a large ball and a small button.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to order three pictures from smallest to biggest and explain the order.
  • Link the lesson to real life by sorting your child's toys, clothes or stationery into big and small groups.

Questions parents ask

What do children learn from big and small worksheets?

They practise comparing objects by size and using words such as big, small, bigger and smaller. The activities also support sorting, matching, speaking and early pencil skills.

Are these worksheets suitable for nursery and kindergarten children?

Yes. Younger children can circle, match and colour clear picture pairs. Older children can sort several objects, complete comparisons and write size words.

How can I teach big and small before using a worksheet?

Use two familiar objects from home or the classroom. Place them together, name each one and ask your child which is big and which is small before moving to the printed task.

Can I download and print these worksheets at home?

Yes. Most EarlyActivity printables are free to download with a free account, which allows up to 20 downloads a day. The PDF files can be printed at home or in your own classroom.

What should I do if my child confuses big with tall?

Compare objects that differ in only one clear way, then compare objects with different shapes. Talk about the whole object and use real items side by side before returning to the worksheet.
