About writing & composition

Writing Practice for Different Forms

This subcategory brings together worksheets for the main types of writing children meet in primary school. Start with sentence writing, then move to picture composition, paragraph writing and longer forms such as essays and stories. Letter writing, journal prompts and diary writing give children a reason to use their own ideas and experiences. The topic pages help you find a suitable activity without sorting through unrelated worksheets. Some pages provide prompts or pictures, while others give children space to plan, write and check their work. You can use one worksheet for a short lesson or pair several forms for a weekly writing folder.

Choose the Right Level for Your Child

For a child who is just beginning independent writing, choose sentence worksheets, picture prompts and short journal tasks. These can support capital letters, full stops, word order and simple descriptions. Children with more practice can try paragraph writing, friendly letters and story writing with a beginning, middle and ending. Older primary children may be ready for essay writing, diary entries and longer creative writing tasks. Read the instructions before printing and choose a page that leaves enough room for your child's handwriting. You can make a task easier by discussing ideas first, or make it harder by adding a word limit and a self-check step.

Ideas for Home and Classroom Use

At home, set aside 10 to 20 minutes for one writing task. Ask your child to describe a familiar object, continue a short story, write a letter to a relative or record one event from the day. Talk through ideas before your child starts, then allow time for independent writing. In class, use a picture composition page for shared planning on the board before children write their own version. Pair students to read their work and check capitals, punctuation and spelling. Keep finished pages in a writing folder so children can see which forms they have practised and choose a topic for the next task.
