A gentle start to written addition

This set gives children repeated practice with single digit addition in a clear, uncluttered format. Younger learners can begin by counting pictures, dots or small groups before writing the answer. Older children can move on to number sentences such as 4 + 3 = 7, mixed sums and short review activities. The pages can be used alongside Addition Within 10 when your child is still building confidence, or after Picture Addition Worksheets when they are ready to rely more on numerals.

Simple ways to use the worksheets

At home, start with a short session and ask your child to explain one or two answers aloud. Keep buttons, bottle tops or pencils nearby so your child can make the two groups before adding them. In class, use one page for guided practice, then let pairs check sums with counters or a number line. You can also place a few completed sheets in a maths folder and revisit them after a week. Let children colour small pictures after solving a section, rather than rushing through every sum.

Help with common addition mistakes

Children often count one group but forget to count the second group, or they write the number of objects in one group instead of the total. Some children also count from one each time and lose track near the end. Ask your child to touch each object once, say the first number, then count on with the second group. For a sum such as 5 + 2, begin at 5 and say 6, 7. Check the answer with counters or a number line, and praise careful checking rather than speed.

Lumi's tips

  • Make an easier page by covering some sums and solving them with counters or fingers first.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to write a matching addition sentence for each picture or create a new sum with the same answer.
  • Link addition to daily life by counting fruit, toys or spoons in two groups and asking for the total.
