This set moves from simple visual matching to more thoughtful pattern work. Younger children can trace lines, copy repeated pictures and choose the item that comes next. Older children can complete AB, AAB and ABC patterns, spot a missing part and create their own sequence. Familiar pictures such as fruits, leaves, toys, shapes and everyday objects keep the activity easy to understand. Children may colour some pictures as they work, giving them another way to notice what repeats and what changes.
Start with one activity and ask your child to say the pattern aloud before writing. At home, place small objects such as spoons, blocks or buttons in a repeating line, then ask your child to continue it. In class, children can work in pairs, take turns adding one object and explain their choice. Use crayons for a quiet table task, or let children point to answers first if pencil control is still developing. When your child is ready for more practice, try AB Pattern Worksheets for focused repetition.
A common mistake is to look only at the last picture instead of checking the whole sequence. Cover the final part and ask, "What group keeps repeating?" Then have your child point to each part while saying the pattern, such as red, blue, red, blue. Children may also focus on colour and miss a change in shape or size, so ask what is the same and what is different. If an answer is wrong, rebuild the sequence with objects and compare the two possible choices together.
Children practise noticing repetition, comparing pictures, predicting what comes next and explaining a simple rule. These activities also give them gentle practice with pencil control and attention.
Children can begin with matching, tracing and two-picture patterns around age 2 or 3. By ages 4 to 6, many children are ready for longer patterns, missing parts and simple AAB or ABC sequences.
Make a line with household objects, sounds or actions, such as clap, tap, clap, tap. Ask your child to continue it, then invite them to make a pattern for you to copy.
You need a free EarlyActivity account to download printables. The PDFs work with A4 and US Letter paper, and you can print them at Actual size, or 100%.
