What children practise

The set uses familiar objects and clear scenes to teach where things are. Younger children can point to or colour an object that is in, on, under or next to something. Older children can circle the correct answer, match pictures to words, complete simple sentences or draw an object in a named place. The activities move from one position at a time to pairs of positions such as above and below, or in front of and behind. This makes the position words worksheets useful for Nursery, LKG, UKG and early primary practice.

Simple ways to use them

At home, read the position word aloud before your child starts, then use a toy and a box to act it out. Ask, "Is the car in the box or beside it?" and let your child answer before marking the worksheet. In class, place a pencil under a book, beside a cup or behind a bag, then invite children to describe the scene. You can use one worksheet for guided practice and let children complete a similar one independently. For extra links with early logic skills, try Sorting Worksheets or Matching Worksheets.

Helping with common mix-ups

Children often confuse above with below, and behind with in front of. They may also use left and right before they are ready to keep those directions consistent. Begin with real objects that your child can move and touch. Keep the object and the reference object still while you say the word slowly. Ask your child to show the answer with a finger or toy before writing or circling. If a picture feels confusing, cover the other choices and talk about just one relationship at a time. Accept spoken answers first, then guide your child to record the answer.

Lumi's tips

  • Make it easier by using one familiar object and two choices, such as in or beside, before offering several position words.
  • Make it harder by asking your child to give two instructions, such as placing the ball under the chair and the book beside it.
  • Link the skill to real life by asking your child to describe where shoes, toys and lunch boxes are kept.
